Sculpting 101

t has been quite some time since I attempted a human likeness. I tried a few in the past, but I don't think my skill level was quite up to the job. Now, though, I've decided to do some likenesses and see how they turn out. After watching The Last of the Mohicans recently, I was intrigued by Wes Studi, who plays the vengeful Huron warrior Magua. Studi also appears (in the role of the very mysterious Sphinx) in one of my favorite movies, Mystery Men . Studi has such a distinctive face that I thought he'd make a great subject for my first likeness attempt in years. I've been very pleased at how he is turning out, and I can't wait to work on some other likeness projects.

1: the original rough, and 2: bringing out the nose and mouth

Here is the latest photo (I just roughed in the ears) along with a photo of Studi as Magua

Nearing completion. I'm applying the skin texture now (after baking I will sculpt his hair)

Close-up showing the skin texture and various scars on his face. I used bristle brushes to create the pores.

I'm having a lot of fun doing this, so stay tuned as Magua takes shape..
